Improving Health Outcomes Through
Research & Education

The significance of research and education cannot be overstated. Research serves as the foundation for knowledge generation, driving innovation and progress across various fields. It enables us to explore unanswered questions and develop solutions to complex problems, ensuring that society continues to evolve and improve.
Similarly, education plays a crucial role in shaping informed and skilled individuals who can contribute meaningfully to their communities. It provides the essential tools for critical thinking, creativity, and effective communication. Together, research and education create a powerful synergy that enhances personal growth and societal advancement, highlighting their indispensable roles in our lives.

Learn More About Our Study

Drs. Jacqueline A. Burnes and Brendon S. Richbourgh are enrolled in the Applied Physiology program at Columbia University's Graduate School of Education, Health & Psychology. Their current research project entitled, How does a walking intervention impact the lived experiences of Black Americans with Rheumatoid Arthritis? focuses on exercise as a strategy to combat chronic pain caused by inflammation specifically within the field of rheumatology.

Research indicates that the chronic inflammation associated with RA plays a crucial role in the accelerated development of atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular complications. Understanding these complex interactions will be vital in developing comprehensive care strategies that not only manage rheumatologic symptoms but also safeguard cardiovascular health in these patients.

Through their studies, both doctors aim to understand how lifestyle modifications can help manage and potentially alleviate the symptoms of these chronic conditions, ultimately improving patients’ health and quality of life. Their work not only applies scientific principles but also seeks to translate these findings into practical interventions that can benefit a wider population.
