CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE

RESEARCH

Burnes Health, a cardiac health and wellness company specializes in transforming data from clinical research trials into practice. Esselstyn  (2008) declared an indisputable relationship exists between nutrition and coronary artery disease. The study required patients to adhere to a whole-food, plant-based diet with acceptable food choices including fruits, vegetables, beans, legumes, and grains for approximately 3.7 years. (Esselstyn, 2008). Dietary exclusions included all animal foods and refined foods containing animal products (Esselstyn, 2008). Select plant-based foods such as avocados, nuts, seeds, and oils high in fat were also disallowed (Esselstyn, 2008). Esselstyn affirmed study participants fell into one of two groups, compliant and non-compliant. At the close of the study, patients who were compliant with program recommendations avoided another major cardiac event, with a success rate of 99.4% (Esselstyn, 2008). Of the 21 patients who fell into the noncompliant category, 13 experienced subsequent cardiac events (heart attack, stroke, or death), at a recurrence rate of 62% (Esselstyn, 2008).
